Mission Sofa Table (2000)


We're re-doing our "formal" living room to include several Mission (or Arts and Crafts, or Stickley depending on who you listen to) pieces. The sofa table below is from plans in Woodsmith magazine. You can check the plans out at this link.

This table turned out very nicely. The quarter-sawn white oak looks wonderful, and I carefully chose the most stunning tiger-stripes for the show surfaces. As usual, the finish is the only thing I'm not too proud of. It's Watco Dark Walnut with a rub-on poly topcoat. A close-up of the finish and striping is shown below.

You can see a bit of the vertical tenons on the side of the table. This tenon theme is a strong charactaristic of Mission pieces, and the theme carries through to the other pieces I built for the living room (coffee table, end tables). A better view of the vertical tenons is shown below.
